The genomic DNA of thirty strains of Aujeszky's disease virus (ADV) isolated in the South and Southeast regions of Brazil from 1982 to 1996 were characterized by restriction endonuclease analysis with BamHI. Twenty seven strains were isolated from pigs, 1 from cattle, 1 from cat and 1 from dog. Using a systematization previously described, the 30 ADV strains could be classified as genomic types I (n = 2) and II (n = 28). Genomic type III was not observed. In this first study of genomic type characterization of brazilian ADV strains, we could demonstrate the occurence in Brazil of the genomic types I and II, with a large predominance of genomic type II. |

The aim of this work was to verify the occurrence of bovine and swine cysticercosis in animals slaughtered at the Abatedouro Municipal de Sabáudia, Paraná State. The number of daily-abated animals, the number of animals with cysticercus and the number and location of the cysticercus in the animals in a period of twelve months were collected. From 1046 swines slaughtered none showed cysticercus, but 36/out of 389 bovines (9.3%) were contaminated. Head was the most parasited region, followed by heart, tongue and liver. The absence of contamination observed in swines and the low contamination of the bovines reinforce the efficiency of the control measures accomplished in Paraná State. |

Clostridium perfringens is a gram-positive, anaerobic, fermentative, spore-forming bacillus that may be found in the environment but is more commonly found as part of the microbiota of humans and animals. The bacterium is considered a common enteric pathogen; however, the pathogenesis and predisposing factors of the disease can differ among species. Therefore, specific studies are necessary for understanding the role of this pathogen, how to diagnose it and which control measures are applicable. The aim of this paper is to review the current knowledge regarding C. perfringens infections in pigs, horses and broiler chickens |

A two-phase study was conducted to compare the efficacy of several enrichment selective-broth steps associated to different plating media for recovery of Salmonella sp. from finishing swine feces. In a first phase, Rappaport-Vassiliadis broth (RV) incubated at 42ºC, Tetrathionate Müller-Kauffmann broth at 37ºC (TMK37) and 42ºC (TMK42), and Selenite Cystine broth (SC) at 37ºC, in combination with three selective plating media Rambach agar (RA), Xylose-Lysine-Tergitol 4 agar (XLT4), and Brilliant-Green Phenol-Red Lactose Sucrose agar (VB) were compared for recovery of Salmonella from artificially contaminated swine feces. In a second phase, RV, TMK37, and TMK42, associated with XLT4 and VB , were tested with naturally contaminated swine feces. In this study... |

Swine mycobacteriosis is an important cause of carcass condemnation at abattoirs. One of the best ways to recognize the etiologic agent involved, in live animals, is the fecal isolation, as 94% of the lesions are located in the digestive tract. Therefore, the goal of the present study was to compare the performance of four decontamination methods followed by inoculation in three different culture media, totalizing twelve procedures of mycobacteria search from swine fecal samples experimentally contaminated. The swine feces were artificially contaminated with 0.02 g of Mycobacterium avium, PIG-B strain, and subjected to mycobacteria isolation trial. The protocols used were: 1) modified Petroff or basic method; 2) modified Lowenstein-Jensen or acidic method;... |

Census of agriculture data were used to estimate manure nutrient production and the capacity of cropland and pastureland to assimilate nutrients. Most farms (78 percent for nitrogen and 69 percent for phosphorus) have adequate land on which it is physically feasible to apply the manure produced onfarm at agronomic rates. (The costs of applying manure at these rates have not been assessed). Even so, manure that is produced on operations that cannot fully apply it to their own land at agronomic rates accounts for 60 percent of the Nation's manure nitrogen and 70 percent of the manure phosphorus. In these cases, most counties with farms that produce "excess" nutrients have adequate crop acres not associated with animal operations, but within the county, on... |
